Larch Valley / Sentinel Pass

Starting at exquisite Moraine Lake, the hike into Larch Valley and Sentinel Pass gives you a hint at the backcountry of Banff National Park. Done in the autumn, if you are lucky and you timing coordinates with mother nature, you will witness the changing of the Larch, a coniferous tree that changes colour and drops it’s soft needles like a deciduous tree! This moderately difficult hike offers remarkable views of the Ten Peaks and the dreamy Paradise Valley if you continue along to Sentinel Pass.

  • Length: 2-2.5 hours each way

  • Distance: approximately 11.5 km return

  • Elevation gain: 725m

  • Difficulty: Level 2 -3 (intermediate - advanced intermediate)

Please bring plenty of water, a yoga mat**, sunscreen, snacks, and dress in layers and appropriately for the weather (note that the temperature can drop significantly with higher elevation).

* If the weather permits, the yoga portion will be held where we hike, before we leave the park. If weather does not permit (too cold or raining) we will hold an optional 6 pm yoga class at a studio after returning to Calgary

**Yoga mat is provided, however if you prefer more cushion for your practice, please feel free to bring your favorite mat.
