Kananaskis Canyon / Lower Lake

Located in Peter Lougheed park with beautiful views of Mount Lyautey, Mount Sarrail, Mount Foch and Mount Fox, Lower Kananaskis Lake is part of a series of man-made and natural lakes created for hydro-electric power in the 1950s . Amentities worth noting in the area include; William Watson Lodge on the East shore, a lodge opened in 1981 by Premier Peter Lougheed and his wife Jeanne, to provide equal access to this beautiful area for people of all abilities; The Peter Lougheed Park Discovery and Information Center, which boasts a small museum and a large sitting area, and interactive/educational programs; and various front and backcountry campgrounds.

The Hike:

We will hike from Canyon Campground down to Marl Lake and back on this trip. The route we take (forest or lake side) will be dependent on the time of year and the level of the lake.

  • Length: 1-2 hours each way

  • Distance: approximately 8 km return

  • Elevation gain: mild

  • Difficulty: Level 1 (Beginner)

Please bring plenty of water, a yoga mat**, sunscreen, snacks, and dress in layers and appropriately for the weather (note that the temperature can drop significantly with higher elevation).

* If the weather permits, the yoga portion will be held where we hike, before we leave the park. If weather does not permit (too cold or raining) we will hold an optional 6 pm yoga class at a studio after returning to Calgary

**Yoga mat is provided, however if you prefer more cushion for your practice, please feel free to bring your favorite mat.

Registration (closes 18h before departure).
